How Do Dental Bridges Work? Do I Need a Dental Bridge?
If you are missing several teeth in a row in your mouth, then chances are you are a candidate for a dental bridge. Dental bridges fill the gap with replacement teeth, also known as pontic teeth.
A bridge has two dental crowns that will rest on your teeth and support the pontic tooth that is hanging in the gap. The most common candidates for dental bridges are individuals who might be missing a tooth (or several teeth) due to decay or injury.
If you are missing one or several teeth, but still have healthy teeth to work with on either side of the gap, you could be a good candidate for a dental bridge.
Why Are Dental Bridges Important?
Whenever you have a gap in your teeth, it can affect the jaw and the teeth on either side of the gap. In some cases, the teeth on either side of the gap can move into the empty space and lead to misaligned bites and occasional pain. This can also cause problems with your bite, your chewing, your speaking, and the look of your smile.
Additionally, a missing tooth can cause the jawbone to break down. If the bone starts to decay, we will have to use a bone graft to make sure that your jawbone is strong enough to handle the bridge.
Types of Dental Bridges
Again, the structure of a dental bridge is fairly simple - there is a replacement tooth or teeth that fills the gap in your mouth, and the bridge is supported by two crowns that will rest partway on your healthy teeth.
If you don't have healthy teeth on either side of the gap due to periodontal disease or other problems, one option is to replace those healthy teeth with dental implants. We can refer you to another practitioner for any dental implant needs.
There are four types of dental bridges that you can use depending on the situation in your mouth.
• |
The first is a traditional fixed bridge that works as described above: a crown on either side, and then the artificial tooth to fill the gap.
|
• |
A cantilever bridge has only one crown that connects to a healthy tooth, so if you have teeth on one side of the gap you can still get a bridge.
|
• |
A resin-bonded bridge, also called a Maryland dental bridge, allows you to replace your front teeth.
|
• |
An implant-supported bridge is held in place by implants rather than natural teeth. |
