Inlays and OnlaysDental inlays and onlays are not as common as the other dental procedures that we offer at Pleasant Valley Dentistry, but they are no less important to your dental health. A dental inlay is a filling that is molded to fit perfectly into the inside of your tooth. Dental inlays are used whenever any dental decay has not sunk into the outer edges of your tooth, and are used to fill cavities. Rather than restoring your tooth from the outside and covering up the damage, inlays and onlays help to repair the tooth from the inside. They are not fillings but are instead a separate type of dental restoration. Which one you will end up using is dependent on the various types of damage you might have for your teeth, as well as the situation inside of your mouth. When Do You Need Inlays and Onlays?Inlays and onlays can be made of various materials, and they are often used whenever you have enough damage to a tooth that is too damaged to fix with a filling, but it also does not need a crown at all. For example, if you have a cracked or chipped tooth, these cosmetic damages might need to be repaired with an inlay or onlay. Additionally, tooth decay might need an onlay to repair it. If you have moderate to a severe dental cavity, onlays might help to provide strength and stability to the tooth while also allowing it to still function. Should I Get An Inlay or Onlay Over Another Procedure?Inlays can be seen as replacements for fillings and onlays can be seen as replacements for crowns. However, when do you get one over the other? While fillings are appropriate for smaller cavities, the bigger the filling is, the weaker it becomes. If you have a very big filling then you might need to get an inlay to fill the cavity and support the tooth. Onlays are for less severe dental issues and only cover the cusp of the tooth to protect it from damage. This still saves the tooth and allows you to have some stability and tooth repair, while a crown tends to be used for dental issues where the tooth cannot be saved. The crown almost acts as a replacement tooth and is placed on once the decay is removed. Only our dentists can tell you when it is right to use one over the other, and it will depend on the situation in your mouth and how severe it is. Still, no matter which procedure you use, all of them will have your teeth healed up, free from decay and back to normal.
