Oral Cancer Screening

Older white patient sitting in dental chair calmly discussing his oral health with his Black female dentist Pleasant Valley Dentistry dentist visit.Oral cancer screening is a simple examination that our dental team at Pleasant Valley Dentistry can perform for you. During the exam, we will take a look for any signs of cancer conditions in the patient's mouth. The goal is to find the cancer early when there is a better chance for a cure. This can be done during a routine dental visit to help catch problems early on.

Why is Oral Cancer Screening Done?

The point of this kind of screening is to detect any form of mouth cancer during the early stages before it has time to spread and cause more problems. This makes it easier to remove the cancer and the lesions before they get worse.

Those who have a high risk of any oral cancer may see more benefits from this kind of screening. It may allow the dentist from our team to look inside the mouth and see if anything looks unusual. It can be done during a routine exam to help you determine whether this could be an issue in your mouth or if there are other health conditions you should watch out for.

There are several factors that can increase your risk of oral cancer including any type of tobacco use, whether it is cigars, chewing tobacco, or cigarettes. Heavy use of alcohol, a previous diagnosis of oral cancer, or a significant amount of sun exposure can also be risk factors.

How to Prepare for an Oral Cancer Screening

You do not need to prepare for an oral cancer screening. In fact, it is usually done when you visit one of our dental teams during a traditional exam.

During the exam for oral cancer, one of our dentists will take a look inside your mouth. This allows them to look for patches that are white or red or if there are any sores in the mouth. Your dentist is also going to feel the tissues in the mouth to check for any kinds of lumps inside the mouth along with any other abnormalities. Depending on what they see, they can also check the neck and throat for lumps.

If our dentist is concerned about what they are seeing or they want to get a closer look at your oral health, there are other tests they may use. An oral cancer screening dye, which is a special blue dye, can be used. The patient will rinse their mouth with the blue dye and abnormal cells can take up the dye and look blue. An oral screening light can do the same things, but with light.
