Periodontal Care

Side by side drawings comparing a healthy tooth with another tooth suffering from periodontal disease.Gum disease is a serious infection of the gums that can damage the soft tissue. Without the right treatment, it is strong enough to destroy the bone meant to support the teeth. Over time, periodontitis can start to cause the teeth to loosen and lead to tooth loss.

This is a common oral health condition that we see in our offices at Pleasant Valley Dentistry, but it is preventable. Since gum disease is more common for those with poor oral hygiene, improving your oral hygiene habits can help fight off gum disease. Brushing two times a day, visiting our offices regularly, and flossing can help reduce these issues. If you do develop gum disease, our team is here to help treat it.

What is Periodontal Maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance is often going to be an in-depth dental cleaning because it will include scaling and root planing. Scaling is when one of our dental professionals will clean below the gums to help remove the bacteria, plaque, and other build-up in the teeth. Root planing is when our team will be able to shape the root of the tooth, getting rid of debris that is left and decreasing bacteria build-up in the future.

When it comes to a regular teeth cleaning, only the debris that is at, or higher than, the gum line will be removed. This cleaning does not go as deep as the periodontal maintenance options do. Periodontal maintenance will also require some aftercare as well. Our team may provide you with antibiotics to use and you will need to come into our offices for more frequent checkups to make sure the gum disease is healing.

Do I Need Periodontal Maintenance?

Due to periodontitis, or advanced gum disease, being a lifelong issue, a treatment will need to be done every three months for an extended amount of time. For some, this needs to be done for their whole life. If it is caught early on and treatments are done aggressively along with strict oral hygiene, it is possible for some patients to go back to traditional teeth cleanings twice a year after the gum disease has cleared up.

When one of our dental professionals asks you to come in for a deep cleaning, it is important to show up for these appointments without skipping them. This will help to treat and care for the gum disease and can prevent other issues from coming up. Without these treatments, the gum disease will advance and you may need to seek tooth replacement options such as dental implants in the future.
