Tooth Extraction
Peoria, AZ

Row of wooden tooth shapes, one of which is being pulled out of the row by dental pliers. When it comes to certain dental issues, tooth extraction may be the best solution. Especially if you are dealing with severe toothaches, an abscessed tooth, crowded teeth, and other issues.

Our team at Pleasant Valley Dentistry has a staff of dental professionals that will perform simple and surgical extractions.

If you are not sure if an extraction may be needed, a visit to our Peoria, AZ dentists can help make that determination. We will explain when an extraction may be needed and when it may not be necessary. In the final analysis, it will be the dentist that will make a decision on what needs to be done.

What is an extraction?

An extraction happens when a dentist or an oral surgeon removes a tooth. This is performed using anesthesia (local or surgical). This may be the best solution if you suffer from some kind of dental issue and the tooth cannot be saved.

When is an extraction needed?

•  You may need an extraction if the dentist believes that it is necessary to have one.

•  You may have an infected tooth that will need to be removed immediately so the infection does not spread.

•  You may be dealing with severely damaged teeth that may be causing chronic pain. Damaged or broken teeth can lead to infections and may also cause other severe problems that span beyond your teeth.

•  Another instance is crowded teeth. This can occur if you have all four wisdom teeth. The wisdom teeth can cause overcrowding of teeth (including overlapping). The sooner the wisdom teeth are removed, the better. Failure to remove these teeth along with allowing them to overcrowd can and will lead to dental problems down the road.

Types Of Extractions

There are two types of dental extractions. The first one is simple. These are teeth that are easily accessible and therefore can be extracted with little to no issue.

A surgical extraction is slightly more complex. Typically, this happens if and when it involves teeth that are badly damaged or not so easy to access. The dentist will determine which extraction is necessary based on their examination and diagnosis.

After an Extraction

After an extraction, the dentist or oral surgeon will provide you with specific instructions. Some of the common post-extraction procedures that you will need to follow include taking aspirin or ibuprofen to reduce any pain or swelling. You also may need to avoid certain foods, especially hard and chewy items, for a couple of weeks.

If you are dealing with any issues where the tooth was extracted, contact us immediately. This will allow us to pinpoint what may be the issue and why it is happening.
